  1.                             INSTILLATION OF FLUORESCEIN

  3. To instill the fluorescein, have the 
  4. patient look down, rest your wrist 
  5. on the patient's forehead and 
  6. grasp the upper lid with the index 
  7. finger over the lashes.  The patient 
  8. should not be able to blink.  With 
  9. the patient still looking down, 
  10. pull the lid up and gently lay the 
  11. flat side of the strip against the 
  12. conjunctiva.  Do not rub the 
  13. fluorescein strip across the eye.  
  14. Gently lift it off and release the 
  15. patient's lid.

  17. Do not use a dry fluorescein strip 
  18. or dab the fluorescein strip against 
  19. the lower lid as this unnecessarily 
  20. irritates the patient and causes 
  21. reflex tearing.
